Gritty realism
There are movies that simply feel like movies, everything is exaggerated to some extend and you just have to accept the rules they establish and go in for the ride, and then there are those movies that feel like all of the events could happen in real life and you almost feel like you are watching real people on the screen. Hell or High Water definitely belongs to the second category. It has a gritty realism to it and never once leaves that pass.
Hell or High Water is directed by David Mackenzie and stars Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges.
Two brothers are in a financially desperate situation and decide to rob a number of banks in Texas.
Two brothers stick together
I think both Chris Pine and Ben Foster were absolutely fantastic in their roles and I could imagine them being actual people stuck in a really bad situation, who are forced to make a choice and deal with the consequences. They had many emotional scenes together and I rooted for them all the time and hoped they would somehow find their way back into a decent life.
Two Rangers with little in common
On the other side, the two Texas Rangers played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham also added much to the movie with both of them constantly nagging each other and also having some deeper conversations. It was also interesting that one of them was a native american christian.
Having this interplay between the brothers and the two Rangers made the movie much more entertaining and gripping, since you kind of want both parties to succeed, and all of them seem like nice people deep down.
That's also one of the reasons why the movie never gets boring, even though it is quiet slow paced. It is really beautifully shot and the country music also added to the mood and fit in very nicely.
There is really nothing negative to say here, I was gripped from start to finish.
Bottom line
Hell or High Water is an excellent film with a great cast, a realistic feel to it and well written characters to root for. If you like slower paced, character driven movies, I would highly recommend it.
