Hereditary Explained - Why did they call him Charlie?

When Peter is standing in the tree house at the end, Joan actually calls him Charlie at first and tells him that he doesn't need to be afraid anymore. Then she explains him that he his Paimon, one of the eight kings of hell.

But why did they call him Charlie?

I think the reason for this is that Charlie spent a lot of time with her grandmother when she was very young and this gave her grandmother the opportunity to use Charlie as a host for Paimon.

The director confirmed in an interview that Charlie has always been Paimon, so it makes sense that the grandmother put Paimon's soul into her body when she was just a baby. So the real Charlie never even had a chance to come out.

Annie didn't trust her grandmother and kept her away from Peter, so Charlie was her only choice at first. Joan also explains at the end that they purposely got rid of Charlie to give Paimon a male host, which implies that Charlie's death wasn't just an accident.

The reason that she calls him Charlie at the end is because Paimon doesn't actually know who he is yet. It seems he only has memories from the time when he was in Charlie's body, so you can say the Charlie, that we know from the movie, actually becomes Peter at the end.

That's also why they put Charlie's head on top of the statue, so Charlie, Peter and Paimon all kind of got combined together.

The cult will now take care of Paimon and wait until he regains his true strength.
