When husband Steve comes home with their son Peter, who broke his own nose in school, his wife Annie begs him to burn a notebook she holds in her hands. Because she thought burning the notebook was the only way to save their son.
Here is why she came to that conclusion.
Because of supernatural events, her son's face was drawn repeatedly on the pages of that notebook. And there were X marks on her son's eyes.
This sounds like someone or something is trying to kill her son, but actually Paimon is not going to kill Peter, he needs his body and is just trying to expell Peter's soul.
Of course Annie tried to burn such an uncanny notebook.
But as soon as she threw the book into the fire, her sleeves started to burn as well, so she started to believe that the notebook and herself were somehow connected.
She assumed that by getting rid of the notebook, she could stop the evil forces that were trying to take her son.
There wasn't any prove that this theory was right, but she thought burning the book was really the only way to prevent the tragedy, so she was even willing to sacrifice herself.
But in this movie the notebook actually had a completely different meaning.
It was actually just a trap to destroy her mentally and weaken her so much that the cult could take control over her.
She begged her husband to burn the notebook, but as he refused to do it, she quickly threw it in the fireplace herself.
But to her shock, it was not her who lit up in fire, instead she had to watch her husband burn alive.
While she asked her husband to burn the notebook for her, she told him how precious and important he is to her.
Watching the person she loved so much all her life die in front of her, made her break down completely and that moment of weakness was enough for the cult to take control over her body.
Actually it was nothing but a small notebook with a bunch of drawings, but it did play a huge role in destroying an entire family, so that's pretty eerie.
