-Spoiler Warning-
What if your partner committed suicide, but your children think it was an accident, would you tell them the truth? Would they be able to handle it, or could this little fact destroy them completely? Losing someone in itself is already painful, but knowing that this person chose to leave you behind, makes it even more heartbreaking.
A difficult decision
In Louder than Bombs one family has to face this extremely hard question. The father (Gabriel Byrne) and the older Son (Jesse Eisenberg), out of two brothers, have to make a decision, whether they tell their youngest family member (Devin Druid) the truth about what happened to their mother (Isabelle Huppert).
Highly realistic
It is a very realistic portrait about how one family deals with the loss of a family member, each of them grieving in their own way. At the same time it is a coming of age story and a look through the eyes of a teenager, who is just very different from other kids at his age.
What is the right thing to do?
The movie also shows that wanting to genuinely do something good in this world and helping others, is not always an easy task and one that can be very exhausting. But should you take care of yourself first, or should you put the needs of others before you?
In the end not everything might have a perfect conclusion and it doesn't all get wrapped up nicely, but so is life, so all we can do is stick together and support each other as good as we can.
Bottom line
Louder than Bombs is a very realistic and humane movie, that shows real people dealing with real life problems. I was highly invested in the characters and their struggles and all the performances were excellent. If you like slow paced character studies and independent movies that make you think, this film might be for you.
