M. Night Shyamalan's Split - Was there actually a twist?

-Spoiler Warning-

If you have not seen the movie yet, check out our spoiler free review first.
Split is a good movie, but one thing that really bothered me, was the lack of strong female characters. From start to finish none of them really did anything about the situation. Of course it was difficult for them to actually do something, but still, I was expecting a little more.

As I said in my spoiler free review, Anya Taylor-Joy was really great here and I think she was such an interesting character. You could sense that she was different from the other girls and there was something special about her. So there would have been huge potential to build that into the story somehow, unfortunately the movie didn't do anything with her.

A twist that there is no twist?

I was waiting for her to explode at any moment and hoping for some kind of twist, but even at the ending, she is just staring at her uncle in anger, without actually doing something. I was hoping that she would have a bigger role in Glass, but she didn't have that much to do there either. It's really disappointing to see all that wasted potential.

I still think it was Shyamalan's best movie since Signs and enjoyed it quiet much. The surprise about seeing Bruce Willis and realizing that this is part of the Unbreakable Universe was interesting too, but I don't think the movie itself had any twists. Not that there has to be, but I think it would have been much more interesting in this case. The movie was good, but it could have been great. I hope that we can see more of Anya Taylor-Joy later, in a role that she deserves.
