Isn't there another way?
Sometimes I really think about stop eating meat completely. I just feel like as an advanced species we should be able to consume lots of different foods, without having to harm any animal in the process. Just like we're shifting towards electric cars to protect the environment, we should care about better environments for farm animals and eventually find a way to replace meat consumption entirely.
Those kind of thoughts went through my mind after watching Okja, the new movie by South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho, but the movie is also about much more than that.
A young girl named Mija is raising a super pig of the Mirando corporation in the countryside of South Korea. Twenty-six of these super pigs are raised at different locations around the world and after 10 years a winner will be chosen.
A true friendship
Basically it is a heartwarming movie about a friendship, just one of them happens to be a super pig. I was rooting for the little girl all the time and Ahn Seo-Hyun's performance was really impressive. The movie also has a fantastic cast of several american actors. Tilda Swinton was excellent as always and I also really liked Paul Dano and Steven Yeun. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a really weird and over the top performance here and I think some people might love it, while others could be annoyed by it. I think i'm somewhere in the middle, he did have some funny moments, but sometimes he just went a little over board.
Masterful direction
Bong Joon-Ho is absolutely one of my favorite directors and what could have been a fairly simple and foreseeable movie, is in his hands so much more complex and exciting. You never know what's going to happen next, it is hilariously funny in one moment, then dark and scary right after that and in the next moment it gets super sad.
Stylish visuals
The visuals are another highlight of the movie and every scene is shot beautifully. There is just no boring moment and if you pay closer attention to the background, you can see that something is going on all the time, no one is just standing around.
But for a movie like this one of the most important aspects is of course the look of the super pig and the CGI here is really done well with such a small budget. It is easy to get attached to the hippo like pig and especially the animation of the eyes is fantastic.
Bottom line
Okja is funny, scary and sad all at the same time. It has very interesting characters and thought provoking messages about our society and more than anything, it is a really entertaining movie with a warm heart.
