The Light Between Oceans Review - What would you do?
The Light Between Oceans was quiet disappointing to me because I liked the other movies of director Derek Cianfrance much better. The visuals were fantastic but the characters and story not so much.
Was there really nothing more to her character?
Alicia Vikander was basically only depicted as a child obsessed mother and the movie made it almost seem like only Micheal Fassbender had any moral concerns. The ending also felt like she was being punished for her decisions while Micheal Fassbender was rewarded for his honesty. I really feel like some more nuanced character development could have made the movie much better.
Was that really a good idea?
Another issue that I had with the movie, was that many of the plot points didn't seem to make much sense. Especially the part with the German man and his baby.
I get that he was not treated very well and probably there was a fight or something with the towners, but why on earth would he take his baby daughter in the middle of the night and jump on a tiny boat and rush into the sea...
That makes absolutely no sense to me, why didn't he take his wife? Why leave so suddenly? Did they force him to jump into the boat or did they try to kill him while he was holding his daughter? And where was he going to go with such a tiny boat anyway? Back all the way to Germany? Good luck with that... And then he just died? Why would a grown up man just die so suddenly while the infant was still fine? I mean he could have had a heart attack, but still it's not very logical at all.
I felt like the writers just wanted to have the baby on the island and couldn't think of any plausible way to get it there.
If you're going to do it try to be smart
Another thing that seemed stupid to me was to bury the German on the island. They could have taken the baby and send the boat with the man back into the sea. Then they could have told the police later that they just found the baby stranded on the island. Of course that is not the right thing to do but if they are going to do it anyway, at least Micheal Fassbender wouldn't have to face murder charges then.
Anyway, I felt like there were a lot of problems with the story. Tell me what you think in the comment section below.
