Nicolas Winding Refn's movies are different, often the style itself can become one of the main characters and with The Neon Demon that is definitely the case.

A young woman moves to Los Angeles to start a career as a model and after a good start, she is faced with the darker side of the industry.

Fantastic performances
Elle Fanning is very good in the lead role as someone who seems quiet innocent and doesn't have any experience yet, but I actually thought that Jena Malone and Abbey Lee were even more impressive. All of them had a lot of tension between them and it was interesting to see how each of them dealt with their jealousy and fears.
Keanu Reeves only had a small part here, but it was quiet surprising because I think he never played a character like that before.

Stunning visuals
As I said before, the visuals are the main attraction here and every single scene looks amazing. Often nothing really happens for minutes while the camera slowly captures the fascinating surroundings and builds up a trance like mood. Personally I really enjoy movies that take their time and really let every scene breath, without cutting all the time and rushing over things, but for some people this could be boring too, since the pacing is very slow.

Deeply disturbing
The movie shows the harsh reality that many models and people in general have to face today and the downside to all those obsessions with youth and beauty.
The ending was particularly shocking and even without showing that much gore or direct violence, it made me feel sick to my stomach in a way that almost no other film did in a very psychological way and I will probably never forget some of that disturbing imagery at the end. Even if it is exaggerated quiet much, I think it is a good way to bring across a message like that and there is a lot of symbolism here.

Bottom line
I think The Neon Demon is a very unique movie with amazing visuals and great performances. Personally I really liked the trance like mood and the atmospheric soundtrack. It's like a nightmare where you don't want to wake up because you are just too curious to see what happens next.
