The Society Season 1 Review - What about the cell phones?

-Spoilers for Season 1-

The Society Season 1 shows us what happens when teenagers are left on their own, drama and chaos is ensured.

The kids of West Ham didn't get very far on their camping trip. All of them were supposed to stay out of town for 10 days, due to a mysterious smell in the area, but because of a blocked road, the bus driver had to take them back to their home right away. The strange thing is that no parent was waiting to pick them up. At first no one made a big deal about it, but after they couldn't reach any of their parents over the phone and no one was at home either, the kids slowly started to panic. They tried to calm down by having a party in the church, but when they found out the next day that the town was completely surrounded by a never ending forest and all of the roads out of town were cut off, things started to get more serious...

This show can be best described as a mix of Under The Dome, Riverdale and a bit of The Twilight Zone. But actually it's not so much about the mystery and how they got there (I guess we will see more of that in season 2), it is more about what the kids make out of that situation and how they overcome all kinds of hardships.

The most interesting part is to see what kind of role everybody takes on in this new society. There are the leaders, Cassandra and later Allie, the rational thinkers, Kelly, Helena, Gordie and Will, the spoiled rich kids, mostly Harry, a bunch of stereotypical football players, except Grizz, and even a psychopath, Campbell and the girlfriend he abuses, Elle.

I liked most of the actors, even though the characters they portrayed were a bit typical, they were still interesting enough to make you curious what happens next. But I have to say that I was frequently annoyed by Allie and her decisions, she really didn't seem like she was ready to be a leader. I don't understand why it had to be her, a lot of the others looked like they would do a much better job. For example, Gordie, Will, Helena or Kelly. All of them seemed much more logical to me, Allie was mostly complaining about everything.

I'm also curious why their cell phones still worked. There didn't seem to be any communication towers left. Maybe they were still using the ones in the real world? Or the magic that brought them there kindly offered a great mobile connection for free.

Since the cell phones were working though, there were a few scenes where I thought it would be so easy to warn others by sending them a text, but no one ever did that when it was really necessary, which bugged me a bit.

The show mostly plays out like you would expect, without any big surprises, but I think it was still worth watching. If you are watching for the mystery though, you will probably be disappointed, but if you just want to watch a teen drama with an unusual background and you don't expect too much, you might enjoy it. I'm definitely curious what happens in season 2, especially since it ended with a big cliffhanger.
