Split Review - In the mind of a psychopath

What if you are not alone in your head?

What if you killed someone but it wasn't really you, the person who did it is actually somebody living in your head, sharing the same body with you. Should you be punished anyway? Is there even a way to prove that someone really has multiple personalities, each one with their own will?

In Split, the new movie by M. Night Shyamalan, a man with 23 different personalities kidnaps three teenage girls and imprisons them.

Terrific performances

James McAvoy is stunning here and he is able to shift between all the personalities in an instant, going from a frightened kid, to a middle aged woman and to a terrifying psychopath all in a short amount of time. Even if he doesn't show us all 23 personalities, he does a fantastic job with about 8 drastically different characters.

Anya Taylor-Joy is also great in her role as a teenager, who seems to be quiet different from other kids of her age. She really brought a lot of depth to the role and could convey lots of emotions without actually saying much.

One thing I didn't like

The other two girls were not that memorable, but luckily the movie didn't focus much on them anyway.

But even though, the one thing that bothered me with this movie, was the lack of strong female characters. I won't go into detail here, but i will write about it in a separate post with spoilers.
M. Night Shyamalan's Split - Was there actually a twist?

Bottom line

It seems like M. Night Shyamalan is back to form. Split is gripping from start to finish, has stellar performances and even some surprises awaiting at the end.
