Since the new IT movie is coming out soon, I thought it would be fun to talk about some parts I liked about the book, that were not really presented well in the TV miniseries.
You have to believe in it
There is a concept in the book that things really can become true, if you believe in it. So if you stab a vampire with a wooden stake, it is not the wooden stake that is particularly effective against vampires, but the people who believe it is. It would be nothing without the power of the mind.
While this concept is addressed in the miniseries, they messed it up pretty badly. The piece of silver they had was meant to hit Pennywise when he was in his werewolf shape, since people believe that silver is effective against werewolves.
But in the miniseries they actually killed Pennywise with the silver projectile, while he was in his clown shape. Actually there was a far more spiritual process they used to kill IT, but I think that would have been too difficult to film. The huge spider already looked awful, if they would have tried to film the real ending from the book it would have probably been really ridiculous.
Still it would have been nice, if they could have found a way that is a little more faithful to the mythology established in the book.
