The Light Between Oceans Review - What would you do?

What is the right thing to do?

I really liked The Place Beyond the Pines, it had a very interesting structure and was quiet original in a way, so I was looking forward to see The Light Between Oceans, the new movie by Derek Cianfrance.

A lighthouse keeper and his wife are living alone on an island. They are unable to have a child, but then one day they rescue an infant girl from the sea and have to make a difficult decision...

I think the best thing about this movie are the visuals. Every scene is shot beautifully and the location itself is almost like the main character of the movie. You can feel the isolation and loneliness of the island and the mood is really tranquilizing.

Good performances, weak story

Micheal Fassbender gives another fantastic performance and Alicia Vikander was very good too. I really like Rachel Weisz, so it was disappointing to see that she isn't very much in the movie. I would have liked to see much more of her and her character. There is also something strange about her German husband in the movie that is not really explained and didn't make much sense to me. I will address this point in another post with spoilers.
The Light Between Oceans - Why did he do that?

Besides the great visuals the movie was basically focusing only on Micheal Fassbender's character and I feel like Alicia Vikander didn't really have much to do here. She was great in Ex-Machina and I would have liked to see some more depth to her character, unfortunately I felt like the movie didn't care so much about her at all.

The story as a whole did have some problems too and especially the ending was quiet disappointing.

Bottom line

The Light Between Oceans is without a doubt a beautiful film to look at, unfortunately the character development wasn't on par and some of the story points, especially the ending were very disappointing.
