The Mummy (2017) Review - Is that it for the Dark Universe?

The Mummy is the first, and possibly last, installment in the Dark Universe series and I was curious to see how different it would be from the Brendan Fraser Mummy from the 90's, which I personally enjoyed quiet much, when I was younger. It was not a perfect movie, but it had likable characters, a fun story and good comic relief between the scarier scenes. So lets take a look at the Mummy from 2017.

Perfect casting choice for the mummy

I think by far the best part about this movie is Sofia Boutella as the mummy. I really liked her in Kingsman and her performance here is again excellent.
Unfortunately she doesn't have that much screen time or dialogue, though she makes up for that with her energy and her charisma.
Besides that, the movie has some nice set pieces and action scenes.
Russel Crowe also makes an interesting appearance.

Unlikable characters

Tom Cruise is a good actor and he usually picks his roles carefully, but i'm not really sure, why he decided to do this film. His character is also really unlikable and he has zero chemistry with Annabelle Wallis's character. Speaking of her, I feel like the movie would have been better without her character at all. She had the same expression on her face during the entire movie and everything about her was very unbelievable.
The ending was also really disappointing, but I will talk about that in a separate post.

Not scary

Also it is just not scary and since this is a horror movie after all, that's not a good sign...
It also tries to throw some comedy and adventure into the mix, but it isn't really funny or exciting either. I think the Mummy from 1999 had a much better balance of genres and actually knew what kind of movie it wanted to be

Bottom line

I thought the Dark Universe was an interesting concept and had a lot of potential, but after this movie was so disappointing and failed in every way possible, it seems we won't even get another one, at least for quiet some time.
The Mummy was all over the place and had neither likable characters nor a coherent story and it wasn't even mildly scary.
The only highlight was Sofia Boutella's performance, but even she couldn't save this movie. I mean, how bad can it be, if it took down the whole Dark Universe by itself?
